TIMBER VENEER FURNITURE GUIDE

WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE VENEER FURNITURE?

If you love wooden furniture, but you’re unsure whether to choose solid timber or timber veneer furniture, having a little timber veneer information can help make your decision easier – and there are certainly plenty of good reasons to choose James Lane timber veneer furniture for your next home update!

WHAT IS VENEERING?

Timber veneering is something of an art form in the woodworking world. It’s the practice of slicing wood very thinly – usually thinner than 3mm! – and gluing these slices onto panels of wood, particle board or medium-density fibreboard-MDF. These are then used as doors, tops and panels for cabinets, parquet floors, and more.

As veneer is obtained either by ‘peeling’ the trunk of a tree or slicing large rectangular blocks of timber (known as flitches), it’s real wood, through and through. No laminate here!

Timber veneering isn’t a new technique – in fact, this art form dates all the way back to the ancient Egyptians and ancient Romans, who would use rare wood veneers over cheaper timbers to create beautiful pieces without needing as much of the expensive timber.

TIMBER VENEER FURNITURE IS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

Green solutions are high on everyone’s priority lists these days, and that extends to eco-friendly furniture. James Lane veneer furniture is a great sustainable option for several reasons. Timber veneer furniture uses less wood than if the same piece were made with solid timber. It may also be more readily available than exotic hardwood lumber, which can be scarce and, as a result, rather expensive. Using veneer – which is also non-toxic and stores carbon for the life of the piece of furniture – makes the absolute most of the use of harvested wood: the amount of wood needed for one solid piece covers a far larger area when used as a veneer.

TIMBER VENEER FURNITURE IS STABLE

While solid wood can warp or split, timber veneer often sidesteps this problem, making for very stable furniture. In fact, some pieces wouldn’t even be able to be built out of solid timber, as temperature and humidity would cause the wood to expand and contract. For these types of projects, timber veneer is a great option, as you get the look you love minus potential problems.

While your James Lane veneer furniture is sturdy – created using only the best sustainable timber Australia and the world have to offer – do be sure to check the care instructions for your new furniture. Not all timber veneer furniture has a scratch resistant veneer, and if it doesn’t have a waterproof veneer, it’s important to wipe up spills as quickly as possible with a damp cloth.
